Hi, I’m Mary Jobaida.

Mary Jobaida is a first-generation American, a mother, and an advocate for inclusivity and justice.

Her candidacy is inspired by her over two decades of experience living in Long Island City, raising her children, and organizing in social and political spaces.

Mary’s jobs as an outreach worker with a network of community health centers, constituent liaison with the state senate, as a public school teacher in underserved communities, and her activism have offered her the opportunity to work with grassroots communities, healthcare organizations, schools, community boards, local businesses, places of worship, and elected offices. Working with underserved communities during the pandemic and beyond deepened her understanding of the struggles everyday New Yorkers face. From her experience, Mary believes government and elected officials can and must do more to address unjust economic inequality and struggles for affordability in Assembly District 36 and beyond.

Mary does not want to accept or let economic disparity increase. All working people deserve all basic needs met, and everyday New Yorkers deserve a New York that they can afford.

Mary’s campaign is endorsed by John Liu, the first Asian American elected in New York and current State Senator, as well as the largest South Asian labor organization and its alliance, ASAAL; the Bangladeshi American Advocacy Group (BAAG); the New American Democratic Club; and the Social Democrats of the USA. However, the most important endorsement is the people's support for Mary.  It's a neighbor-to-neighbor movement by local people with no big farm or consultant involve in running this campaign.

Mary's goal is to create the best constituents service and make New York inclusive, just, and livable for all of us.

  • Affordable housing

  • Fully funded NYCHA

  • Universal healthcare and childcare

  • Climate-resilient infrastructure and renewable energy

  • Workers' rights and local business support

  • Free quality education through college (Free SUNY and CUNY)

  • Public safety and justice for immigrants

  • Tenant protections and help for struggling homeowners

  • Fully funded public transportation

Here’s what we can do TOGETHER:

  • Housing Affordability

    • Truly affordable housing for the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

    • Freezing rents for stabilized apartments.

    • Establish land trusts and other social housing models to secure affordability through community ownership of real estate.

  • Universal Child Care and Education

    • Fully fund quality child care and education from 3K to college.

    • Extend paid parental leave to 2 years.

    • Provide more skills-based training in trade and vocational schools.

  • Universal Health Care

    • Put NY Health Act up for a vote, where it WILL pass.

    • Protect both home-care workers AND disabled community members by recruiting, training and paying workers enough that nobody has to work a 24-hour shift OR go without skilled care.

    • Protect access to gender-affirming healthcare service for Trans New Yorkers.

    • Fully fund community healthcare centers for preventative services.

  • Decriminalizing Poverty

    • Expand youth mental health support, employment and entertainment / enrichment services.

    • Expressly transfer funding and authority from police to community mental health response.

    • Fund restorative justice and diversion programs.

  • Protecting Democracy and Empowering Ordinary People

    • Term limits for all elected offices.

    • Automatic voter registration.

    • Publicly-run workshops on how to run for office and how to organize for change.

    • Institute safeguards against voter intimidation and public disinformation.

  • Small Business Sustainability

    • Universal rent control, including for businesses under a certain size.

    • Partnerships with the City, State and Federal governments to secure low-cost funding and guidance / assistance for struggling businesses.

    • Establish local Small Business Advisory Boards to advocate for local needs outside of big-business-dominated Chambers of Commerce.

  • Climate Resiliency

    • Fund long-delayed and badly-needed upgrades to NYC’s sewer system.

    • Fund climate-resiliency infrastructure including rain gardens and green roofs.

    • Pressure NYSERDA to finally permit Rise Light & Power’s alternative energy conversion, shutting down the polluting stacks at the Ravenswood Generating Station.

  • Helping Small Homeowners and Communities

    • Transfer tax-break benefits from big developers to small homeowners who live where they rent.

    • Provide city assistance and/or communal funding for needed upgrades so small homeowners can provide safe, comfortable apartments and remain in-code.

    • Allocate support for building and maintaining Community Land Trusts.

  • Ending Second-Class Citizenship for NYCHA Tenants

    • NYCHA is the City’s largest landlord, and the only one held to almost no standards. Affordable housing tenants deserve ALL the protections given to private renters.

    • Fully fund NYCHA, and reform its work order system so that tickets are not closed without proper and timely resolution.

    • Allow rent withholding if basic needs aren’t met, as is the right for NYC private renters.
